Dallas was founded in 1841 and has a diverse economy of banking, commerce, telecommunications, computer technology, energy, healthcare and medical research, transportation and logistics. Because of this diversity, the city is the hub of the third largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the nation. The city’s location makes it part of the largest inland metropolitan area in the United States that lacks a navigable link to the sea; however, Dallas is part of the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the United States, divided between five counties. This vast size lends the city to be the ninth most populous city in the United States.

The prominence of Dallas arose from its history as being the center for the oil and cotton industries, positioned along a multitude of railroad lines. The advent of the interstate highway system allowed Dallas to become a focal point with the convergence of major interstate highways, Interstate Highways 75, 635, 30, 35E, 35W, and 20, with 635, making a continuous circle around the city. The aviation industry matched the ground transportation’s vastness by creating Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, one of the largest, busiest airports in the world.
